The day was 25th May which later changed to first Monday before 25th May. However, the confirmation for this holiday to be a national holiday was made just after her death, i.e. 1901. The celebrations date was switched in 1952, i.e. the Monday preceding the actual birth date, i.e. May 25th. The year when Queen Elizabeth II took over as the Queen of United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland. She is still the ruling Monarch of Canada.
Queen Victoria was also the one who is responsible for declaration of Ottawa as the Capital of Canada. This happened when Canada was granted independence as an entity of the British Empire in 1867. Ironically, at that time she was the ruling monarch of Canada.

In 1845, it started as a Day of Celebrations while Queen Victoria was the ruling monarch of Canada. Furthermore, the day was designated as May 25. It was not only a celebration in some parts of Canada, but from border to border. In 1867, i.e. the year of Independence, on the Independence Day, Victoria granted Canada the independence status. In the year 1901, the year of the death of the Royal Monarch, it was officially stated first time as the national level Holiday. A holiday in the whole of provinces of Canada, but celebrated as “Victoria Day”. Finally, in the year 1952, it was switched from May 25 to a Monday preceding the ex-official date. The main reason were due to some staunch religious beliefs of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. The main aim was to avoid Sundays as part of the celebrations of ‘The Victoria Day’.
