Ontarians locked down due to hospital capacity problems

It’s common practice in wartime for generals and other senior figures to be subbed out if things aren’t going well.

Yet here in Ontario, where the province has just been plunged once again into lockdown because of health care capacity issues, all of the top health care executives are still sitting comfortably in their cushy jobs.

Make no mistake about it, public health  officials aren’t particularly concerned about vaccinated people in their 20’s, 30’s or 40’s getting the Omicron variant.

It’s been confirmed by Public Health Ontario that the variant is significantly milder than the Delta variant.

Ontario schools are not shutting down out of concern for the kids themselves.

Far from it!

Before Omicron, there were only about 40 elementary school-aged kids hospitalized due to COVID-19 in Ontario, throughout the course of the pandemic.

As pediatric infectious diseases physicians have maintained, this virus has, thankfully proven to be less severe than influenza in kids.

No, schools and everything else- are shutting down because of concerns that even though the variant is milder for the individual, the sheer volume of new infections could mean that the tiny percentage of people who have a rough time of it, is enough to overwhelm hospitals.

Fair enough, but Ontarians must then push back and ask: What the hell does that have to do with me? And especially, what the hell does that have to do with my kids?

Ontarians did what was asked of them. They got vaccinated – many of them three times. Their kids got vaccinated. They followed all the rules. They lost out on so much, so many big life moments.

They went without seeing loved ones for months on end. They downloaded the vaccine passport or QR app, which we were told would be what guaranteed no more lockdowns.

And what happens after they do all that in the face of a milder variant? Everything gets shut down and they’re told they must “do more.”

It’s time to say enough is enough.

valued customers

Matt Anderson, who took the podium at last Monday’s announcement, is president and CEO of Ontario Health. He is paid more than $630,000 per year to effectively manage the health care system.

Anthony Dale is president and CEO of the Ontario Hospital Association, who is paid $433,000 per year to likewise effectively balance the issues facing hospitals.

These are just two examples of the hundreds – yes hundreds – of very well paid health care bureaucrats who, unlike our frontline heroes, haven’t delivered the excellence that we have a right to expect of them. That they should be not just endorsing but urging this latest lockdown is really an admission of defeat on their part.

Canadian taxpayers have collectively thrown hundreds of billions of dollars at COVID-19. Last week, there were 244 people in ICU in Ontario for COVID-19.

It is simply not acceptable that children should be denied schooling and society shut down because a G7 nation’s hospital system is somehow threatened by such volume.

Those in health care administration always offer some dismissive remark about how you can’t just snap your fingers and create new beds or procure new nurses, yet somehow they find it easy to crush the rest of society in one fell swoop.

Besides, nobody ever claimed it was easy. But what more and more people are now saying is that after almost two years of prep time, it’s a scandal that people who ae supposedly well suited to their jobs are still trotting out these old arguments. It’s also a scandal that Premier Dough Ford and Health Minister Christine Elliott continue to accept their game plans.

Hospital capacity is a real concern. But no parent in Ontario should accept it when someone whose actual job is to protect the hospitals tries to flip it around on them and tell them it’s in fact the job of their children to protect the hospitals.

Our health care generals are failing us. Maybe it’s time to get some of them off the field, end this unjustified lockdown and get in people who can rise to the occasion.

MBE is highly active in creating social awareness through social media with regards to social distancing measures and how necessary they have been in the current pandemic. Our goal is to act as a catalyst in helping the Government through tough times and enable them to bounce back from problematic scenarios. The Covid-19 crisis is still having huge repercussions on the financial sector causing catastrophic cash flows problems for most companies due to having little or no business activities from March 2020 to January 2022. Although various restrictions have been loosened for some businesses, it is next to impossible to get back the business they have lost as we endure our 23rd month of the pandemic.

Sure the Government has tried to help with their CECRA and CERB programs but like everything else in life, these programs have their flaws.

While the league says the vaccination policy doesn’t apply to spectators, some facilities have already brought in their own spectator mandates as well as rules allowing only one spectator per family inside the arena.

Businesses and organizations all across  the province are eager to get back to normal and do whatever it takes to avoid another shut down and limit the disruptions that come with testing and isolation policies.

That said, leagues are more than just cold hearted bureaucracies churning out edicts. They’re community hubs for civil society. Should their default position be to cave to the lowest common denominator demands of the most skittish among us? Or should they be leaders in standing up for our youth and advocating for more balanced policies?

If the GTHL scrapped the vaccine rule, there might be a few busybody parents who would send indignant emails to the league, but they’d soon quit their whining and just enjoy the game.

When kids soccer leagues got underway, the written rules sent out to parents were laughably strict. They said only one family member can attend as a spectator, players should use hand sanitizer during breaks, and no high fives were allowed.

Nobody followed those rules and nobody enforced them. Families came out to cheer on their kids, who had a great season enjoying doing something the same way they did pre COVID.

Granted there’s a difference between an outdoor activity in the summer and an indoor activity in the fall and winter but let’s hope something similar happens when it comes to striking a balance with the more over the top hockey rules.

Take as an example this one, from the GTHL’s formal guidelines: Cheering or yelling by spectators is strongly discouraged.”

No cheering in hockey?

Good luck with that.

Some rules are made to be broken.
