Mid of March 2021
IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED, TRY TRY TRY AGAIN
At least we have some good news to report on the Vaccination front. At first, Canada had deals in place with Pfizer and Modena to distribute their vaccine across Canada. The country ran into distribution problems and there were periods of time when the country received nothing from either of those two suppliers. With distribution once again up and running, more and more vaccination centres are opening up across the country. Recently, the country has made a deal with Oxford-AstraZeneca, manufactured in India, to distribute their vaccine to the many Canadians who are waiting for their shots. There is talk that the AstraZeneca dosage will be used strictly on the over 60 age group.
To top off the good news, Canada has recently approved Johnson & Johnson for their Covid Vaccine as well. Where the other three companies require 2 doses each, Johnson & Johnson only requires one dose.
Not sure how I would feel about the choice of one or two doses but if the other three are two shots, I think I would prefer to get two shots as well. I would assume that all three are equally as effective but for peace of mind, my choice would be two.
At present time, the over age 80 able body group is receiving their shots in addition to health care workers, long term care facilities and first responders. With various vaccination centres popping up across the country, long lines are present. Vaccination centres are booking appointments on line and given people a time to show. The problem is when they show is not when they’re getting their shot. I know of a situation where someone had an appointment for 4:00 and did not get their shot until three hours later. I guess there are bugs in every system. The government just had to figure out how to work out the bugs.
The government is playing with the idea (currently happening in B.C.) of delaying the second dose for those who have received their initial dose and administer it to the remaining population. Their hope is to get everyone vaccinated by mid-summer with one dose one way or another. I guess their hope is one dose is better than no dose and hope there are no outbreaks before the second dose is administered.
With a little good news comes even better news. The three remaining regions that were under lockdown including Toronto, Peel, and North Bay, came out of lockdown on March 8th at 12:01am. Toronto was moved to the Grey Zone.
What that means is the following:
Animals – All vet and grooming services are allowed.
Libraries – Open for computer use and contactless pick up only.
Outdoor Gatherings – Increase from 5 to 10 respecting social distancing guidelines.
Recreational – Ski and snow sports and golf and day camps resume with conditions.
Religious service – Increase from 5 to 10 for indoor weddings or funerals.
Retail – All stores can now open with capacity restrictions.
What does not change are Indoor gatherings – must remain with people in your household only.
Personal services – Hair Salons and Gyms still closed.
Restaurants – Still take-out and delivery only.
Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, is still pushing for some of those regions to stay in lockdown and she seems to have the ear of Toronto Mayor John Tory. They both seem to be in lockstep with one another when it comes to their dealings with the city and Covid 19.
With numbers slowly coming down on a daily basis and the number of reported hospital cases also coming down, allowing the hospitals to operate at close to peak efficiency, the major business associations are pushing the government to loosen restrictions. Their members are crying poor and rightfully so after this most recent lockdown in addition to all the restrictions put upon them since last March.
How can a restaurant survive with only 10 patrons at a time? In most regions excluding Toronto, only 10 people are allowed for any indoor gathering. Most restaurants are better off closing their doors and cutting their losses instead of paying wages and food preparation as well.
All the while the big box stores are allowed to open with certain restrictions but rarely enforced.
Let’s hope the worst is over. Although the reported new strains that have arrived from places including United Kingdom, Africa, and Brazil are upon us, we seem to be managing quite well and are adhering to the Government’s decree of STAYING HOME!
MBE is highly active in creating social awareness through social media with regards to social distancing measures and how necessary they have been in the current pandemic. Our goal is to act as a catalyst in helping the Government through tough times and enable them to bounce back from problematic scenarios. The Covid-19 crisis is still having huge repercussions on the financial sector causing catastrophic cash flows problems for most companies due to having no business activities from March to March. Although various restrictions have been loosened for some businesses, it is next to impossible to get back the business they have lost during this past year.
Sure the Government has tried to help with their CECRA and CERB programs but like everything else in life, these programs have their flaws.
The Health & Well-being of all our customers, clients, and stakeholders is something that MBE Inc. hopes for on a daily basis. Always take precautions and measures to keep your loved ones safe when it comes to anything regarding COVID-19.
