Mid of February 2021
THE DOG DAYS OF WINTER
With February, comes bitterly cold temperatures and lots of snow but so far we have been fairly lucky. Daytime temperatures have been near 0 Celsius while nighttime temps dip to minus 5-10 Celsius. Not too bad. Even better, until a slight dusting of snow last week mixed with some freezing sleet, I had the pleasure of seeing my green grass which is something I can’t remember the last time I saw my grass in February.
The lack of daylight that comes with the clock change in November is no longer noticeable as the amount of day light increases daily. No longer do we wake up to daylight and head home after work in complete darkness.
Once we hit March, which is a little more than 2 weeks away, we are entering the home stretch of Winter. Baseball spring training will hopefully be on going which signals that spring is just around the corner.
So far in early 2021, we had the double whammy of the lockdown due to Covid 19 and winter but it looks like we may have escaped the worst part of winter with only a few weeks of significant bad weather left.
Speaking of Covid 19, the lockdown is still ongoing but there is some good news on the horizon. Schools were set to open this past Monday in all parts of Ontario except Toronto, Peel and York Regions which are scheduled to open the Tuesday after the Family Day long weekend.
There is talk of businesses ignoring the government lock down and opening en masse as they try to survive during the Pandemic. Hopefully with spring around the corner, the restaurants will be allowed to go back to outdoor dining and hopefully even indoor dining six feet apart. With the number of positive Covid cases trending down, I’m sure the government restrictions with be loosened. The lockdown seems to have done its job with regards to the overflow of patients in the ER but not on the economic front. Businesses have been shuttered, job losses too many to count with no announcement as to when they can open again.
The airline industry has been hit hard during the pandemic and new government restrictions on travel and the potential spread of Covid 19 is a sure fire way to keep the airline industry in the red. New strains of the Covid 19 virus have been detected recently from as far away as the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil. Symptoms are the same but the strain will spread faster from person to person.
I recently received an e-mail from my Doctor’s office advising me that they were hoping to have my family and myself vaccinated in the months of June or July. Well this announcement was sent before the vaccine shipments were stopped altogether in Canada. At this rate, it will be another long summer of being in your own bubble while continuing to social distance from friends and extended family. At least we can look forward to the warm spring and summer days and being outside instead of being cooped up in your home during the winter months.
MBE is highly active in creating social awareness through social media with regards to social distancing measures and how necessary they have been in the current pandemic. Our goal is to act as a catalyst in helping the Government through tough times and enable them to bounce back from problematic scenarios. The Covid-19 crisis is still having huge repercussions on the financial sector causing catastrophic cash flows problems for most companies due to having no business activities from March to February. Although various restrictions have been loosened for some businesses, it is next to impossible to get back the business they have lost during those eleven months.
Sure the Government has tried to help with their CECRA and CERB programs but like everything else in life, these programs have their flaws.
