Red Is The New Grey!

While the regions of Toronto and Peel are into their second week of the lockdown, not only is the sky Grey but so is the color of the mood of the retailers and the color of our region lockdown.

Grey seems to be the new normal around these parts. The ever-popular show on Netflix, called Orange is the New Black has some competition when it comes to names. Here in Canada, we can call ourselves Red is the new Grey. While Toronto and Peel wallow in their own misery, there is talk that some other regions in Ontario will be moving from Red to Grey as well after this weekend. Along with Toronto and Peel, other Provinces are already in the lockdown grey stage. With Christmas only a few weeks away and retailers gearing up for what should be their most profitable month of the year, all the while trying to recoup some of their losses for the last nine months of Covid-19, retailers are faced with the reality of being closed and not opening again until the last week before Christmas proving the numbers either stay where they are or drop.

Some retailers have taken the approach of fighting fire with fire. They are defying the lockdown and opening up regardless of what the Government says. Adam Skelley, the owner of three restaurants called Adamson BBQ, has defied the authorities and opened up one of his locations. His restaurant was filled with patrons while the police politely told him to close. It took three days for the message to get through. He opened Monday, Tuesday, and finally, Wednesday, while accumulating summonses for each of the days he defied authorities, the locks were changed and he has led away in handcuffs and jailed for his actions.

Believe it or not, a Go Fund Me campaign was started by some of his customers to help cover some of his court costs.

He is not alone when defying the government. Some other retailers have defied the law as well only to be charged by the police. Most of the charges stem from not following safety guidelines with the number of people in their location vs the square footage of the retail space.

What I find hard to understand is where is the logic when big-box retailers like Costco, Walmart, Canadian Tire, and grocery and drug stores are allowed to open because they are deemed essential. Because they sell some form of groceries in their 30-100,00 sq. foot location, they are deemed essential. You can pick up everything else along with your groceries and nobody seems to care while someone who operates a specialty store not selling groceries has to close.

In addition, stores like Costco entertain customers in the hundreds at some time or another during their operating hours and there is no hint of social distancing.

Would you rather be in a small store with 5 people or a big store with hundreds of customers? I would think the small store would be much safer to navigate than a large store teeming with customers.

The Government, although trying their best, just isn’t doing enough for the non-essential store owners. Certainly, the government subsidies help but in the long run, with all the road blocks the government has installed, the end is near for the small “mom and pop” shops who have spent a lifetime honing their craft and making their store the best it can be.
The chances of survival without any type of Christmas sales are slim and none.

Across the ocean, the United Kingdom has become the first western country to offer the vaccine for Covid-19. Can the U.S. be far behind? Although cases are soaring in the States, numbers in the hundreds of thousands of reported positive tests daily, there seems to be a small light at the end of the tunnel.

While back in Canada, the Prime Minister expects to have everyone vaccinated by the third quarter of 2021.

Due to Covid-19, I guess the way we live and how we live is the new norm and until we are all vaccinated, things will remain that way.

Everyone and everything is at the mercy of this Pandemic. Stay safe, stay healthy, and keep to your own social bubbles!

MBE is highly active in creating social awareness through social media with regards to social distancing measures and how necessary they have been in the current pandemic. Our goal is to act as a catalyst in helping the Government through tough times and enable them to bounce back from problematic scenarios. The Covid-19 crisis is still having huge repercussions on the financial sector causing catastrophic cash flows problems for most companies due to having no business activities from March to June. Although various restrictions have been loosened for most businesses, it is next to impossible to get back the business they have lost during those 4 months.

Sure the Government has tried to help with their CECRA and CERB programs but like everything else in life, these programs have their flaws.
