Deadline passes for Unvaxxed TDSB staff

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) placed 98 permanent staff who hadn’t disclosed their vaccine status on unpaid leave.

A week ago Monday, was the deadline to TDSB’s 41,485 staff members to be fully vaccinated or face an unpaid leave or termination.

Another 700 occasional staff hadn’t disclosed their vaccination status as of a week ago today but within hours that number fell to 600.

It was expected numbers would continue to fall as staff members communicate their status and as those with only one dose get their second shot.

The November 1st deadline was extended to Nov. 21st while about 900 requests for medical or religious exemptions are considered.

There are 499 religious requests and 410 medical requests; So far five medical exemptions and zero religious exemptions have been granted.

No church or religion has spoken against COVID-19 vaccinations.

Those whose exemptions are denied will be given 45 days to be fully vaccinated.

The mandate applies to anyone who has contact with TDSB staff and students.

TDSB spokesperson Ryan Bird said the 609 occasional staff who didn’t disclose their status are also on administrative leave without pay, but many of them haven’t been working in the TDSB for the 2021-22 school year.

Occasional staff cover many different areas,  including supply teachers, lunchroom supervisors, clerical and office staff and technical support workers, among others.

Updated TDSB figures showed that 90% of staff were fully vaccinated. Only 0.2 of full time staff haven’t supplied their vaccination status.

Bird said the board didn’t anticipate and challenges in the regular daily operation of schools.

Of the permanent staff, 13 are elementary teachers and three are secondary teachers and Bird responded that these numbers will be easily covered by the occasional teacher roster.

“You may see a situation where kids will have a different teacher.”

As for the occasional staff who are on leave, many of them have not stepped foot in a TDSB building this year. They haven’t picked up any jobs this year and the option is theirs.

It’s fair to say that there is a bit of hesitancy in some cases, given the pandemic.

The Nov. 21st deadline gives  the board time to ensure staff is on hand to cover off those on leave.

While the league says the vaccination policy doesn’t apply to spectators, some facilities have already brought in their own spectator mandates as well as rules allowing only one spectator per family inside the arena.

Businesses and organizations all across  the province are eager to get back to normal and do whatever it takes to avoid another shut down and limit the disruptions that come with testing and isolation policies.

That said, leagues are more than just cold hearted bureaucracies churning out edicts. They’re community hubs for civil society. Should their default position be to cave to the lowest common denominator demands of the most skittish among us? Or should they be leaders in standing up for our youth and advocating for more balanced policies?

If the GTHL scrapped the vaccine rule, there might be a few busybody parents who would send indignant emails to the league, but they’d soon quit their whining and just enjoy the game.

When kids soccer leagues got underway, the written rules sent out to parents were laughably strict. They said only one family member can attend as a spectator, players should use hand sanitizer during breaks, and no high fives were allowed.

Nobody followed those rules and nobody enforced them. Families came out to cheer on their kids, who had a great season enjoying doing something the same way they did pre COVID.

Granted there’s a difference between an outdoor activity in the summer and an indoor activity in the fall and winter but let’s hope something similar happens when it comes to striking a balance with the more over the top hockey rules.

Take as an example this one, from the GTHL’s formal guidelines: Cheering or yelling by spectators is strongly discouraged.”

No cheering in hockey?

Good luck with that.
