LITTLE TO LAUGH ABOUT
Ontario’s never ending restrictions have become a joke compared to other provinces
I don’t want to wear a mask indoors anymore. That’s what I’m feeling on this third week of July, living in Toronto.
Now depending on where you are in Canada, you’re going to have widely different responses to what I’ve just said.
Many of my neighbours in downtown Toronto and other Ontario cities, their reaction will probably be somewhere between shock and horror. After all, it’s still illegal not to wear a mask in Ontario stores and based on what officials are saying, it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon.
But if you live in British Columbia or Alberta, my opening line probably elicited a yawn and a whatever. That’s because those provinces repealed their mask mandates as of July 1st. And while some people still choose to wear them, many do not.
It’s not just the mask mandates, though. It’s the whole approach. While much of Canada is evolving its response to COVID-19 and reopening society, Ontario is in a perpetual state of fear. The province that’s supposed to be a dynamic force for the federation has now become a backwater state, a joke compared to other provinces.
While everyone else in the Western world is looking for reasons to reopen, Premier Doug Ford and the Ontario government cling to whatever excuses they can find to stay closed and take things at a glacial pace.
Indoor dining, gyms, art galleries and museums – these are all places that have been open in other parts of North America for months now, but remain closed in Ontario.
Based on the latest data from Public Health Ontario, there are only 1,841 active cases of COVID-19 throughout the entire province of more than 14 million people with the vast majority of those people already isolating at home.
The question is now not what one needs to do to avoid contracting the virus in Ontario, but what one would need to do to get it even if you wanted it.
If you believe you need to wear a mask in an Ontario store, then you should also buy a lottery ticket while you’re there because those are the sort of odds you’re dealing with now.
Still the madness continues. Ontario does not have an actual reopening plan, despite what Ford says. The current plan merely concludes at Stage 3, which starts on Friday – with mask mandates, capacity limits and distancing rules in place for the foreseeable future. After stage 3, who knows where we go from there.
The harmful policies that Ontario kids have needlessly endured are also set to continue.
During a recent appearance on CTV News, the province’s new chief medical officer, Dr. Kieran Moore, bizarrely claimed that kids will likely still be masked come the fall to protect them not from COVID-19, but against other viruses.
This attitude represents a disturbing step backward.
One of the challenges, though, is that not as many as you’d think are up in arms about the sad state of things. The last year and a half has been habit forming for too many people and the psychosocial scarring runs deep. Ontario therapists are in for boom times in the months and years ahead.
That said, you’ve got to think that as more people who want to be double vaccinated get their shots and as the numbers continue to crash and as it gets harder to stop Ontarians from clueing in to what’s happening everywhere else, more and more people will call for this to stop.
Until then, the joke continues.
And it’s entirely on us.
MBE is highly active in creating social awareness through social media with regards to social distancing measures and how necessary they have been in the current pandemic. Our goal is to act as a catalyst in helping the Government through tough times and enable them to bounce back from problematic scenarios. The Covid-19 crisis is still having huge repercussions on the financial sector causing catastrophic cash flows problems for most companies due to having no business activities from March 2020 to July 2021. Although various restrictions have been loosened for some businesses, it is next to impossible to get back the business they have lost during these past 16 months.
Sure the Government has tried to help with their CECRA and CERB programs but like everything else in life, these programs have their flaws.
