End of November 2020
NOW WHAT!
COVID 19 is not going away anytime soon!
Effective this past Monday, just in time for the Christmas rush, Toronto and Peel regions have been moved to the Lock Downstage which means that non-essential retail will be closed. What classifies has non-essential retail, only the Premier and Health Canada know for sure.
Malls will be closed. Barber shops and Nail Salons will be closed. Restaurants will be closed (take out only). All non-essential retail will be closed (curbside pickup only). Theatres and Gyms closed.
All the while, big-box retailers along with grocery and drug stores will remain open. This past weekend, I noticed for the first time in quite some time, line ups to get into the grocery store.
With Covid numbers soaring, various Provinces are in different stages of lockdown. Quebec, Manitoba, and Alberta have joined Ontario in various forms of lockdown. The Premier of BC is imploring the federal government to restrict travel from Province to Province. Ontario’s numbers have exceeded a thousand daily positive tests of Covid 19 for the last while.
Things aren’t much better south of the border. With the U.S. entering Thanksgiving week and their numbers reaching over 100,000 positive tests daily, these numbers have nowhere to go but up. Aside from Christmas, Thanksgiving is probably the second most family-themed holiday of the year. Turkey dinners celebrated with family and friends while the most business will close for the four day holiday (Thursday thru to Sunday), will keep people in the party mood. How many of those people will adhere to social distancing and keeping their dinners to just family?
Snowbirds who usually travel south this time of the year, are weighing the options of staying home in the cold amid isolation from family and friends or head south to the warm weather and potential risk of contracting the virus and having to potentially require a hospital stay and astronomical hospital bills.
A long cold dreary winter just got longer with shorter days of sunlight and nowhere to go. Depression is setting in.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Ontario region and its ludicrous lockdown, let me explain it best this way.
The region of Toronto and Peel is in lockdown. If I live south of Steeles, running east and west, I can walk across the street to the region of York, a 10-second walk, and everything that is closed in Toronto would be open in the York region. How does that control the spread of the virus?
Winston Churchill Blvd running north and south separates the Peel and Halton region. if I live on the east side, I can walk across the street to the west side and everything is open. Where is the logic?
Not all is doom and gloom when it comes to the virus. There is talk of a potential vaccine that is just around the corner. So far the success test rate is somewhere around 90%.
Canada has a deal in place to purchase the vaccine from two different Pharmaceutical companies. Moderna has a success rate of 95% on its initial trial while Pfizer’s success rate is 90%. Both figures are promising.
When comparing the two companies, both would require two doses of the potential vaccine to work but the big difference would be that Moderna’s vaccine has to be stored at -20 degrees Celsius, whereas Pfizer’s vaccine has to be stored at -70 degrees Celsius. Finding freezers that can accommodate millions of doses stored at -70 degrees Celsius maybe be troublesome.
Regardless, with the vaccine testing moving along rapidly, don’t think for a moment that the general public will be getting their dosage any time soon. We along with everyone else who is not a first responder or a health care worker will have to wait patiently for the vaccine to be 100% effective, for Canada to purchase enough dosage, and then join a long line of millions who wait their turn. It will probably be sometime in the 3rd quarter of 2021 that you may see the vaccine available for the general public.
GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT!
Everyone and everything is at the mercy of this Pandemic. Stay safe, stay healthy, and keep to your own social bubbles!
MBE is highly active in creating social awareness through social media with regards to social distancing measures and how necessary they have been in the current pandemic. Our goal is to act as a catalyst in helping the Government through tough times and enable them to bounce back from problematic scenarios. The Covid-19 crisis is still having huge repercussions on the financial sector causing catastrophic cash flows problems for most companies due to having no business activities from March to June. Although various restrictions have been loosened for most businesses, it is next to impossible to get back the business they have lost during those 4 months.
Sure the Government has tried to help with their CECRA and CERB programs but like everything else in life, these programs have their flaws.
The Health & Well-being of all our customers, clients, and stakeholders is something that MBE Inc. hopes for on a daily basis. Always take precautions and measures to keep your loved ones safe when it comes to anything regarding COVID-19.
