I am at a loss for words to try to understand or even explain what the Ontario government is doing when it comes to the handling of Covid19.

When in doubt, close everything down except essential service!

You would figure if they close everything down, the number of positive test results for COVID 19 should and would result in less positive tests.

As the saying goes “The best laid plans of mice and men, often go awry”

Not only did the number of positive tests not go down, they continue to sky rocket and reach levels never seen before.

How could this be?  With less and less people out and about, the numbers should surely fall! With less shopping options, the numbers should surely fall! With various work places closed, the numbers should surely fall!

The answer to those three questions are NO, NO NO!

The numbers will surely not fall!

So what are the next steps? There is talk of further sanctions and closures. Should we call in the National Guard and have them police the people with mandatory curfews to ensure they stay home.

Should we limit the number of people per household? Should we go door to door and make sure only family members reside at that place of residence?

Give your head shake people. No matter what you do, you aren’t going to stop people from doing what they want to do

The government thought they had it all figured out. Let’s close all non-essential business. Let’s close all the mom and pop stores, all appliance stores, all furniture stores and while we’re at it, all the apparel stores as well.

By doing that, people will surely stay home with nowhere else to shop.

I guess they figured that people would refuse to visit Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, Canadian Tire, your corner grocery stores that range in size from 5000 – 100,00 sq feet.  With nowhere else to go to buy anything essential, people have flocked to the above mentioned retail outlets. Posting better than expected earnings, not only is it Christmas time, but they are experiencing Christmas  like sales, like it’s groundhog day over and over again.

As long as they sell essential products, the rich get richer!

I can look at what the Ontario government has done thru two different lenses and both don’t paint a very pretty picture.

Firstly, by closing all non-essential service, people are taking their shopping experience to the big box retailers.  By closing the small stores which  can limit the number of people in their location rather easily and practice social distancing, you are herding them like cattle into a big box retailer with unlimited people shopping at one time.

What is more safe and where would you feel most safe – Being one of 10-30 people in a 5000 sq ft retail store or being one of many hundreds in a 25-100,000 sq ft retail location.
I certainly would feel most comfortable in a smaller store with less people which is much easier to enforce social distancing.

Secondly, and to me most importantly, why CAN’T  I buy a bed, apparel, furniture or coffee makers in my friendly neighborhood store but I CAN buy the exact same thing in a big box retailer like Costco, Walmart or Home Depot?

Talk about a non-level playing field  and some things just not being fair.

Most politicians making these decisions, don’t really get the impact of their decisions. For the most part, their lives have continued.  The politicians and those working closely around then have continued to go to work, continued to get paid, they have not been laid off and asked to leave their homes while wondering how to pay their bills.

That’s a very real reality for the people affected by the decisions being made.

Have any of these people, and lets include doctors, nurses and hospital CEO’s, demanding even harsher lockdowns , had to worry about their finances during this entire crisis? Have any of them ever gotten to the end of the day worried about how to feed their kids and keep the lights on and gone to bed thankful that they made it another day but not sure about tomorrow?  NO THEY HAVE NOT!

Yet that is what they’re asking millions of people to do while shaming and scolding them and implying that they aren’t doing enough for the common good to defeat the virus.

People have lost their savings, their homes, their businesses and are at wits end and told we need just another lockdown, another four weeks to flatten the curve.

It hasn’t worked before and it’s not going to work now.

People should be allowed to make their own decisions with who, what, where, when and why they do what they do.

With the government  lockdown in place, instead of the intended slowdown of the spread of the virus, what we are seeing is the exact opposite.

I’ve  said it time and time again. Open everything up, let people make their own decisions and live with the consequences.  Force those retailers that are open to follow health guidelines for their place of business, their employees and the customer who comes in their retail establishment.  One strike and you’re out!

Instead of businesses closing and employees being laid off, maybe just maybe everyone could have survived and come out on the other end all the  more stronger for it.

Hind sight being 20/20,  with the desired effect of the lockdown not working, what the government should have done was allow everyone to remain open and once Christmas is done, come January 1st, shut everything down.  This way, businesses would have had a chance to recoup some of their lost sales from the previous months while allowing them the opportunity to enjoy what is for most, the most profitable month of the year!

On behalf of all of us at MBE, we want to take this opportunity to wish all of our  merchants, members, suppliers and  staff, a very Merry Christmas, a happy holiday season and a happy and most of all, a healthy NEW YEAR

MBE is highly active in creating social awareness through social media with regards to social distancing measures and how necessary they have been in the current pandemic. Our goal is to act as a catalyst in helping the Government through tough times and enable them to bounce back from problematic scenarios. The Covid-19 crisis is still having huge repercussions on the financial sector causing catastrophic cash flows problems for most companies due to having no business activities from March to December. Although various restrictions have been loosened for some businesses, it is next to impossible to get back the business they have lost during those 10 months.

Sure the Government has tried to help with their CECRA and CERB programs but like everything else in life, these programs have their flaws.

The Health & Well-being of all our customers, clients, and stakeholders is something that MBE Inc. hopes for on a daily basis. Always take precautions and measures to keep your loved ones safe when it comes to anything regarding COVID-19.
