End of June 2020
With the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd still creating news, Covid-19 is front and centre in the news once again.
While most of the United States has been wide open for quite some time, certain States are now feeling the effects of Covid-19 and being wide open before they were ready.. Florida, Arizona and Texas have all reported record number of positive tests and those numbers are increasing daily. With the NBA, NHL, PGA and Major League Baseball getting ready or have resumed their activities, maybe it’s time to take step back and take a look at what has transpired in our own backyard.
Premier Doug Ford has been adamant that he will not open the province until we are ready to open. With Phase 2 upon us and all regions of Ontario open except Windsor Essex, the numbers of reported positive tests for Covid-19 has been decreasing almost daily. So before we scream and shout about what the government has done to the economy, maybe, just maybe we should tip our hats to the Premier who has done a very good job managing and making sure that we all stay healthy. Obviously, we can’t have the best of both worlds. The economy, although now open, has and will continue to struggle to get back to pre Covid-19 times. For some of us, that may never happen. The damage may be so severe that what people have spent a lifetime working towards, could be gone in an instant. Hopefully for most of us, it is not too late to start again and try to recoup whatever business was lost.
With mostly everything now pretty well open, the question is – Will we ever get back to the way it was Pre-Covid-19. People can eat outside at restaurants on the patio with tables spread out. Most patios are operating at half capacity. I guess some business is better than no business at all. Malls are now allowed to be open with designated walking patterns to those going shopping. Only a certain number of people will be allowed in a mall at any time. People must wait outside until they are allowed in. This is no different than the dental offices or hair salons. Only a certain # of people are allowed in at any time while we wait outside or in our cars until it is our turn to go in.
Let’s hope the vaccine is here sooner than later so that we can get back to living our lives in a sense of normalcy.
Although the passing of George Floyd has moved to the back pages of the news, the cause of Black Lives Matter is now top of mind. Everybody is walking on egg shells making sure that what they say and who they say it to, will not be perceived as offensive. Celebrities have apologized for being racially insensitive for things that happened years ago. Some have even lost their jobs because of what they said a long time ago. Between the women’s movement and BLM, people should hope that something they did or said years ago does not come back to haunt them. It seems that people have to apologize these days for being Caucasian and living as they say “ a privileged life”.
Will we ever live in a perfect world where everyone can co-exist and get along peacefully? The answer to that question is probably not but at least it seems that things are now moving in the right direction.
All of these social causes are coming to the forefront and people are finally being heard. Let’s hope that what they are saying is not falling on deaf ears and something good comes out of all this negativity that has permeated throughout the world.
