End of February 2020
As we head into the last week of February, this has been a winter to remember so far in Southern Ontario. Whatever snow we have is remnants from the occasional storm and the temperatures have been well above normal for this time of the year. In fact this week alone, the forecast is calling for temperatures well above 0 Celsius. In southern Ontario this is certainly not the norm and hopefully the rest of the country is following suit.  Hopefully this wonderful weather can continue and we can get a head start on Spring.Â
With the Coronavirus news picking up steam around the world, whatever steps Canada has taken to stop the spreading of this sometimes deadly virus, seems to have worked so far. With the virus spreading throughout the world, very few new cases have been reported Canada. With the Coronavirus news subsiding just a little around the world, the relevant news in Canada is the blockage of the CN Railway Lines. The demonstrators set up blockades in British Columbia and Ontario in solidarity with opponents of the Coastal GasLink pipeline project that crosses the traditional territory of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation in northwestern British Columbia. As a result, other blockades have popped up in other provinces crippling the railway industry. With passenger trains being delayed or shut down throughout Ontario, it pales in comparison to the effect it has on the Canadian economy.   Canada currently ships massive amounts of pulp to the United States along with parts of Asia and as a result, Wood, pulp and paper producers have lost tens of millions of dollars. With the highways and trucks already at near available capacity, especially in Quebec and southern Ontario, the railway lines are the next and most economical way of shipping across Canada and the United States. Let’s hope a quick resolution can be found and Canada’s economy can get back on its feet.
In other news, Parasite is now the first foreign film to win an Oscar for best picture. There is no better way to see all the Oscar winners in a movie than our Cineplex Movie passes available from MBBP. Save from $4.00 to $14.00 (depending upon the package you choose) at any Cineplex theatre or affiliated theatre across Canada.
With the Railway blockades, there is talk of gas prices rising as the potential shortage of fuel becomes a real concern. As a result, our Esso fuel 3.5 cent discount is a great way to beat the fluctuating gas prices you see at the gas pumps on a daily basis. Depending upon where you are and the time of the day, the price of gas could fluctuate by as much as $0.07 cents a litre from morning to night in different parts of the city.Â
Don’t forget the RRSP deadline is Feb. 29th which only gives you a few days if you want to contribute to or top up your current RRSP’s. With income tax season just around the corner, why not take advantage of our free personal tax return.
